Wrapped around the eastern side of the Arabian Peninsula is the Sultanate of Oman. This is a country of geographical extremes: extremely beautiful and unspoiled golden beaches that stretch for 1,700 kms along its often mountainous coastline, extremely lush and fertile oases surrounded by date palm and banana plantations, extremely scenic desert landscapes filled with soaring, red and white sand dunes, extremely interesting towns and villages scattered the length and breadth of the country. It is also a land of great contrasts where ancient traditions are blended with the modern age. Thanks to Petro-dollars, and under the guidance of the current Sultan of Oman, the country has developed a progressive, 21st. Century infrastructure while retaining its Bedouin roots and a deeply ingrained tradition of hospitality.
Oman has been inhabited for over 6,000 years and because of its strategic location on the Arabian Peninsula, it has been influenced by many other ancient cultures over the millennia. It is also the land of frankincense that in biblical times was a commodity more precious than gold.
Beyond its spectacular scenery, Oman is an historical treasure trove. Across the country are many forts, strongholds and watch towers that have withstood marauders and invaders for centuries. Extensive walls surround some of the forts while others are famous for their highly decorative interiors. The capital, Muscat, is full of fascinating museums, forts, palaces and mosques. Built on the sea, its harbor and waterfront Corniche form the very heart of the city. The souks (markets) are an Aladdin’s cave of khanjars (traditional silver daggers), coffeepots, frankincense, silver and gold jewelry, camel saddles, hand woven textiles, carpets, and baskets. Oman is a nation waiting to be discovered.
