Jordan

Overview of Jordan

Born of the Hashemite kingdom in Biblical times, re-created as the Kingdom of Jordan in the aftermath of WW1, this is a land bursting with historical wonders. Amman, the capital, is a vibrant, friendly city of uniformly white buildings and tree-lined streets, full of fascinating museums and lively markets filled with artisans’ workshops.  It boasts historical ruins starting in Neolithic times and includes the grand architecture of the Greeks, Romans and Arab Islamists.  Beyond the city is a countryside of wonderful panoramic scenery from deserts and fertile valleys to the extraordinary Dead Sea to the white sands at Aqaba on the Red Sea.

But it is its antiquities that attract most visitors to Jordan.  Following the 5,000 year-old King’s Highway, visit Jerash, the world’s best-preserved Roman town or walk through the mosaic city of Madaba, where Byzantium churches display mosaic masterpieces.  Most famous of all though, is the exquisite ‘Rose City’ of Petra, a unique city carved out of the sheer red sandstone cliffs by the ancient Nabataeans.

Whether visiting its desert wadis, looking for the rare ibex in the Dana Nature Reserve, enjoying sun and sand at the Red Sea resorts or drinking it this nation’s past, Jordan will fulfill many a travel dream.
