Overview of New Zealand

New Zealand is not really a big country, being about the size of Colorado but it is a big nation with millions of acres of unspoiled national parks and scenic reserves, thousands of kilometers of awesome coastline, Alpine-sized mountain ranges and just over 4 million friendly Kiwis, aka New Zealanders, not to mention millions of sheep!

Maoris call this two-island nation Aotearoa - Land of the Long White Cloud and their rich cultural heritage is in evidence everywhere.  On the sub-tropical North Island, Rotorua is not only a geothermal wonder with its spouting geysers and bubbling mud holes, it is the heartland of Maori folklore.  From Wellington, the capital, renowned for its arts and gardens, to Auckland, the country’s economic engine, the rolling hills, vineyards, sheep ranches and trout-filled lakes are all part of the North Island persona.

Arriving in the South Island is to enter of land of lofty mountains, windswept beaches, and magnificent fjords like world-famous Milford Sound.  Queenstown is ‘adventure centre’ where there is a veritable buffet of outdoor activities to choose from.  The Victorian-style architecture of Dunedin and quiet elegance of Christchurch with its breathtaking backdrop of the South Alps are delightful places to visit between bouts of whale watching, kayaking, hiking and sightseeing.  So, pack your camera, dust off those smiles of delight and get ready for a special journey through one of the most welcoming, picturesque and interesting countries on the planet.
