OverviewSouthern India offers a visual legacy that you just have to see to believe. Its iconic towering temple gateways, its elaborately carved temples and its adherence to daily Hindu rituals, are wondrous. On this two-week trip, you come to realize just how old India really is, having been a flourishing nation for 1,000s of years before the British Raj made Madras (now Chennai) its first settlement. Set off from Chennai where there are still faint echoes of the Raj, and travel along the Bay of Bengal coast, stopping along the way to enjoy the beaches and see monumental carvings out of living stone along the shoreline. Temples of every age, size and style abound as you visit Tanjore and Trichy as well as see such treasures as the Chola Bronzes.
Madurai is the very epitome of temple extravaganza with its ornately carved and multi-colored temple towers and thousands of pilgrims. Up in the Western Ghats enjoy the beauty of the Nilgiris Hills where many hill stations are located. Mysore is full of palaces and is the heart of the silk and incense industry. There are Jain temple sites and Hoysala temples to explore before finishing this fascinating journey in Bangalore with its museums and beautiful gardens.
