Arrival

Arrive in Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel. This immense bustling city, known as the New York of India, is famous for its magnetism, and is considered the most cosmopolitan and forward-looking city in India. Mumbai attracts people from all parts of the country who come to the city with big dreams and hopes of fulfilling them in this financial and commercial capital. The balance of the day is at leisure.

After breakfast at your hotel, set off by motor launch to visit the island of Elephanta which is just an hour away from Bombay. (Please note:  Elephanta caves are closed on Monday).  The cave temples here, excavated between the 5th and 8th Centuries AD, are famous for their magnificently sculpted panels. The best known is one that depicts the Maheshmurti - a three-headed image of Lord Shiva. The caves are reached by a stairway up the hillside from the ferry landing. This afternoon’s tour starts off at the Gateway of India, Mumbai’s principal landmark. This great arch of yellow basalt was erected on the waterfront to commemorate King George V’s visit. Next enjoy the splendid views of the city and the Arabian Sea from Malabar Hill and the Hanging Gardens. Continue on to nearby Mani Bhavan, Mahatma Gandhi’s home and Museum. This charming, 3 storied Gujarati house, painted brown and yellow, in a lovely Parsi neighborhood on Malabar Hill, houses a library and a small museum about Gandhi’s life and birth and is maintained by the Gandhi Institute. The evening is at leisure.
