Chennai (formerly called Madras) is known as the ‘Gateway to the South’ and it was here that the British through the East India Company gained a toehold on the Indian Subcontinent and built their first major settlement.  But Chennai has a history that is much older than Raj, dating back to the 1st Century AD.  While here, you will have the opportunity to also see some most unique rock carvings, a highlight of this part of India.

Arrival

Arrive in Chennai, where you will be met and transferred to your hotel for a 3-night stay. Chennai is the capital of the Tamil Nadu State and though it is one of India’s largest cities, this coastal city on the Bay of Bengal has a surprisingly, relaxed atmosphere.  The balance of the day is free to explore on your own.

+ - Day 2 Chennai › Kanchipuram › Mahabalipuram › Chennai

Set off this morning for nearby Kanchipuram, the Golden City of a Thousand Temples, and considered one of India’s sacred cities.  Many early styles of architecture will be seen here as you visit its numerous temples.  Afterwards continue on to Mahabalipuram, an ancient coastal port south of Chennai. This beautiful seaside area consists of a the tiny village by the sea in which all else is dwarfed by a dream world of awesome Tamil art, an open air museum of sculpture in living rock including the Descent of the Ganga, the world’s largest bas-relief.  Next visit the Shore Temple which has stood by the Bay of Bengal for 12 centuries. The tour ends with a stop to see the fascinating Five Radhas, a group of monolithic monuments of animal figures are carved out of solid rock.  The evening is at leisure in Chennai.

This morning enjoy a sightseeing tour of Chennai city. Though it was the oldest settlement in the British Raj, the ancient spirit of the city remains to this day, and only the cathedral and Fort of St. George is a reminder of its British past.  Visit the Marina Beach - second longest beach in the world, it’s an elegant promenade and Fort St. George - the first foothold of British from where Robert Clive started the expansion of British Rule.  The balance of the day is at leisure.
