This brief excursion will give you a taste of the Kalahari with its dry pans and harsh beauty.  The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is an extremely diverse ‘thirstland’ ecosystem with large populations of game all year round.  Home to the iconic “San” or Bushmen, you will discover through their eyes the exceptional bushcraft that allow them to survive in a seemingly hostile environment.

Staying first at a lodge with private chalets, out-door shower and verandah, you will spot wildlife at a nearby waterhole.  Two nights in a tented camp in a remote region of the Reserve will give you a real feel for the desert surroundings with its sweeping views of the Kalahari.

Botswana is blessed with many different biospheres across its vastness and the Kalahari with its exceptional and often rare wildlife such as the Black-maned Liions and the Desert Elephants is one of the jewels in its crown.

Arrival

On arrival in Maun we meet and transfer you by road towards Deception Pan. Tonight enjoy a thrilling game drive through the surrounding wilderness area.

+ - Day 2 Deception Pan › Central Kalahari

Start the day with a guided Bushman nature walk to learn about the survival skills of the ancient San people.  Then drive through starkly beautiful scenery to your desert camp, game viewing en route in a land filled with unusual flora and fauna.

Spend the day exploring this desert environment, home to Gemsbok, Springbok and Blue Wildebeest as well as Lion, Jackal, Meerkats and especially the Cheetah.  Wild Dog and Leopard are also among the area’s many predators.

Age limit

Children from the age of 12 are welcome on all scheduled departures.  For parties with children under 12, a private tailor-made safari will be quotes are on request.  For guests over the age of 75, a recent certified medical certificate of good health must be submitted on booking confirmation.

Flashlights/torches

Please ensure that a minimum 2-D cell flashlight is brought on safari, with spare batteries. Head lamps are also useful. Wilderness Safaris does not supply flashlights.

Camera battery charging

Please note that a 12V cigarette lighter adaptor will be required (that is compatible with camera make) on this safari for charging batteries while on game drive or transfer drives. No 110/ 240V outlets are available, except at Deception Valley Lodge.

LOCATION:  Approximately 25 miles from Deception Pan, bordering the Central Kalahari Game Reserve

The lodge accommodates 16 guests in private chalets, each with a spacious lounge, en suite Victorian Style bathroom, outdoor shower and veranda.  The main area, connected to the units by elevated wooden walkways, boasts dining, lounge and bar areas.  From the deck wildlife can be seen at the nearby waterhole and there is a curio shop, small library, swimming pool and boma for evening meals.

+ - Kalahari Plains Camp

LOCATION:  Situated in a remote part of the diverse and productive Central Kalahari Game Reserve.  Located in the Kalahari Desert biome in the central part of Botswana, this reserve is the largest conservation area in this country and at 5 million hectares, one of the largest in the world.

Kalahari Plains Camp comprises of six Meru-style en-suite tents with a central area with lounge dining area and central bar.  The tents main area are all raised off the ground to catch the breeze and take in the sweeping spacious view across the Kalahari.  Solar power provides electricity and hot water, and the innovative insulated canvas walls and roof keep the temperatures inside comfortable.
